 A COVENANT CHRISTMAS
Loving God and Neighbor Through Our Prayers, Gifts, Service, and Witness

Advent is upon us – the time of preparing our hearts for Christmas, the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  Traditionally, it’s a time for the giving and receiving of gifts.  But Christmas is not our birthday – it’s God’s!  What if there was a Christmas gift that we could give – to God?

In the United Methodist Church, when we are received into the membership of a congregation, we promise to uphold the church by our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness.  The congregation promises to do all in their power to support the new member in their faith journey.  This promise that we make to each other is sacred and covenantal.  And it is a great blessing – a gift we give to each other in the name of Jesus Christ.  When the people of the church live into this covenant with intention, commitment and love – then it becomes a gift that we give to God.

Think about it – what gift could God possibly want?  God created all that is.  Everything already belongs to God!  There is one exception – the human heart.  Our hearts don’t always belong to God.  God made us this way.  God’s greatest gift to us is our free will. We can choose to love God, or not.

Advent is a time of watching and waiting for the celebration of Jesus’ first coming; during this season, let us gather to reflect on our personal and congregational faith practices – practices that can lead us into deeper relationship with God, with one another, and with our neighbors;  practices that can become a sacred and covenantal gift that will delight the heart of God!

Sundays in Advent – Sermon Series and Discussion/Study Group after worship from 11:30 – 12:15:

December 1           The Witness of Prayer

December 8           The Witness of Presence

December 15         The Witness of Gifts

December 22         The Witness of Service

Please plan to join us in worship and in study!  Bring your Bible and a notebook, and a heart that is ready and willing to be wrapped up and tied in ribbons – and offered as a Christmas gift that will delight the heart of God!
