How Can I Serve?

Mission Outreach Opportunities

Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA) is a church-related voluntary organization providing rental assistance, day care, food,  furniture, and other services to low-income families.  Sleepy Hollow UMC supports ACCA with year-round donations of canned and dry food.  You can help!  Drop off your donations at the church in the plastic bins at the Sanctuary Entrance.
Go to ACCA’s website for more information:  https://accacares.org

Bailey’s Shelter & Supportive Housing is a multi-service facility that houses both a shelter program and permanent supportive housing.  We support the shelter year-round by collecting travel-size toiletries and packing them into individual hygiene kits.  You can drop off your donations at the church in the plastic bins at the Sanctuary Entrance.  You can also help pack the kits and deliver them to the shelter.

For two weeks each winter, SHUMC hosts the shelter’s hypothermia overflow shelter.  Shelter guests stay at the church overnight and church volunteers can prepare hot meals, serve food and provide snacks, fruit and bottled water. Donations of new socks, gloves, warm hats and coats are welcome.

There are many volunteer opportunities at the shelter.  Go to the shelter website for more information:  https://www.newhopehousing.org/our-services/shelters/baileys-shelter-supportive-housing/

Mason District Police Department serves our community to reduce crime, address traffic concerns and improve quality of life.   Sleepy Hollow UMC supports our police officers by praying for them, and by providing coffee (K-cup pods), individually wrapped snacks and bottled water.  You can drop off donations at the church in the plastic bins at the Sanctuary Entrance.  Go to the MDPD website for more information:  https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police/district/mason

Ministry of Leadership

Nurture The ministry of Nurture includes Christian education such as adult, youth and children’s Sunday School and study groups, worship, Christian formation, membership care, small groups, and attention to the needs of individuals and families of all ages.

Outreach:  The ministry of Outreach gives attention to local and larger community ministries of compassion, justice, and advocacy.  SHUMC supports local entities as Annandale Christian Community for Action (ACCA), the Bailey’s Crossroads Shelter, National Night Out, and the Mason District Police Department.

Witness:  The ministry of Witness finds ways to share the good news and truth of God’s gospel with our neighbors and our world.  We desire to develop meaningful relationships with the people our community and to share our personal and congregational stories of our Christian experience and faith.  Witness communicates what we are doing and supports the development of lay ministers and other expressions of witness for Jesus Christ.

Trustees:  The ministry of Trustees leads the congregation in caring for the physical property of the church: the buildings and surrounding grounds.  This is a ministry of stewardship of the physical resources that are entrusted to the local church.

Finance:  The ministry of Finance leads the congregation in stewardship of the financial resources of the church, in the spiritual discipline of giving, and in the short- and long-term financial planning and support of the mission and ministries of the church.

SPRC:  The Staff/Parish Relations Committee serves to connect the needs and resources of the congregation with the needs and resources of the clergy leadership and church staff.  SPRC works with the local church, Arlington District UMC and Virginia Conference UMC leadership to provide and support pastoral leadership in the local church.

Nominations/Leadership:  The Nominations/Leadership Committee serves to develop and support leadership within the congregation, knowing that the influence of church leaders often goes beyond the local church out into the world.   The ministry of leadership in the church is a ministry of stewardship of the human resources that God pours out on the church.
